12 May 2004: Brookings to Florence, Our First Venture!

It’s time to weigh. We’re legal, let’s go! Hooray!  Let’s tour the USA.

We’ve changed our home address with the DMV and “Continuous Travelers” we will be.

We’ve said our fond farewells to new friends that we have made,

To Jan and Richard, Jeanine, and “Blue,” and Sandra and Michael, too,

Who will send us our mail along the way as long as we say,

We’ll keep in touch from both near and far with our jokes and picture postcards.

Lining Highway 101, a variety of pink rhododendrons and Scotch brooms

Colored the way as we zoomed toward the Oregon sand dunes.

I do not like pink, I don’t, but they did so make me think,

How fortunate we are to be able to do this exciting traveling thing.

The sky was blue so the ocean was too as we drove north today,

We stopped for lunch and checked on the cats to make sure they had not gone astray.

Now, who is that cat watching the world go by from that window up so high?

It’s Harry, I say with confidence, then I look again and say, No, way!

It’s Sadie who seems so interested in things passing her by,

That kitty prozac must be making her high!

She’s awake during the day and friendly at night and she no longer gives us a fright.

We think that she is no longer mad at the changes we have put her through,

As long as we are around to pet her and comb her black fur, too.

We passed through some dots on the map, a few small towns we did see.

There’s windy Gold Beach and the cranberry bogs for Ocean Spray in Bandon by the sea.

There are many fishing towns like Port Orford, the oldest town on the Oregon Coast,

And Winchester Bay for the salmon folks who flock to the salmon runs each spring and boast

about the bigger fish that got away just up the coast yesterday.

There’s a lumber mill in Coos Bay and a Casino where you can play.

We chose Florence, city of rhododendrons, for our home tonight,

And in Old Town, we walked in search of a meal to appease our appetites.

Those baby steamers really tasted delicious, said Tom, and Kay enjoyed her cake,

Tomorrow we will explore the beach and several of the nearby lakes.

The preparation for this venture has taken us almost a year,

But now that we’re on our way, we are sure that we did right,

To choose this lifestyle of nomads who roam during the day and sleep well at night.

Our bed is comfy and our kitchen is stocked and the curtains are hung in the windows just right,

It’s time for bed, so now, I’ll just say, “Good night.”
