August 2003, In the beginning...
Our Travel HistoryTom camped out of the back of his family's pick-up truck when he was a kid in the mountains of WV. As a college student, he hitch-hiked across country from WVU to the West Coast. He had some travel experiences in the Navy on the USS Greenbay traveling around the USA and in Guam and Puerto Rico. I relocated from WV to MD at the age of 10 with my family when my father came to MD to find work after losing his job on the failing railroads. In my early teens, I took a summer school class in local history which took me to many points of interest in DC, VA, and MD. During my first marriage, I traveled across country from MD to the West Coast, camping in the back of a van at National and State Parks. From 1991 to 1995, I worked for the Department of Defense Schools in Frankfurt and Mannheim, Germany, and traveled to many countries in central and southern Europe. I also traveled to Africa and Israel. Unfortunately, I wasn't taking photos at that time because of the high cost of film and developing it. Now that digital cameras are here, it's a much easier and less expensive process, and I have found that I enjoy it. Taking pictures forces me to slow down long enough to enjoy the moment. Last summer, we traveled across country from the East Coast to the West Coast in our Subaru Outback with Harry and Sadie in the back behind a pet divider. We didn't stop to tour any areas as we were eager to get to our beach house, and the cats were eager to get out of the car and Best Western hotel rooms. Now, we will pull our small house, aka RV-fifth wheel, along with us to visit places often frequented or off the beaten path. Come on along... Preparing to hit the road...Tom has done most of the research to prepare for our travels, while I have contributed some good ideas, like our cat apartment. He has documented his findings on this web site in great detail including the purchase of our new GMC truck and the design of the RV. He has located a huge storage unit for our household belongings and found a mail center service to forward our mail. He has maintained the books and created the web site. He has been a busy man! Now, we will begin sharing the process. I will write the travelogue and continue to take photos. I will organize my cache of photos into categories and select the best shots for the first CD: Oregon's Coast. There are sections of Oregon's Coast that still take my breath away and solicit an "oooh-aaah" response every time! We're off to Kansas to fetch the RIG!We will head to Kansas on August 27 to fetch our new home/office. We are packing bed linens, bath items, kitchen items, and clothes. We used the Trailer Life CD and Directory to plan our trip. Although the CD is PC-formatted, Tom used some of his software genius to make it work on his Mac using Virtual PC. He found it very helpful and recommends it. I will document our experiences with the Horizons-RV when we pick it up o/a September 3. |
