June 15-July 29, 2004: Yachats to Idaho

The poetry muse has left so now I return to prose.  We have finally left the West Coast, much to Tom’s dismay.  He whines often about missing the ocean breeze and his coughing and hacking is quite annoying to both him and to me.  He really needs that salty sea air and his Scottish blood needs cool temperatures and clouds.

I am finally HOT!  We traveled through Oregon to McCall, Idaho.  McCall is definitely a tourist town with development all around the Payette Lake.  Lots of construction is happening and according to the local folks the cost of lake property has soared. We stayed in McCall RV Resort, a new RV park, which will be great when the construction is finished. There are very few good restaurants, but we did find Sagebrush in New Meadows, about 13 miles from McCall, that had great Texas-style barbecue.  On July 4, we ventured on down to the lake for the 10 minutes of local fireworks shot from a barge.

From McCall, we traveled along the Oregon-Idaho border through the Hell’s Canyon area, quite desert-like, and HOT, but very interesting.  The Snake River runs through it.  We stayed at Woodhead Park, one of several developed and managed by Idaho Power.

We planned to travel north to Coeur d’Alene.  We had passed through that area on our trip from the East Coast to the West Coast three summers ago and thought that it was quite beautiful.  A fellow RV’er recommended Beyond Hope RV Park, so named because it is located just a little beyond the small town of Hope, Idaho, just north of Sandpoint, on Lake Pend Oreille (pend-o-ray).  It is located in a wildlife game preserve so deer roam freely here.  The fawns are especially cute.

We have all adjusted to our small space.  Our cats let us use their day-bed at night.  Harry has stopped scratching to go outside, mostly, and goes out with us in the morning while we have our coffee or tea and then again at dark to just be outside. I know that he misses hunting for his bird for breakfast and rodent for dinner. He prefers being inside during the hot, noisy part of the day.  Sadie has just recently started sitting out with us in the evenings.  On July 25, she even took Tom for a short walk.

From here, we travel on through Montana ...
