20 March 2005: Noise, a Wrinkle, Egrets, and Bumpety-Bump

Last night's hitching post in Hammond, Louisiana, was near a local road where Saturday night traffic was busy. That Catfish Charlie's Restaurant next door must be a local Saturday night hang-out. Cars were a'racing all night long causing a restless night for both of us.

Then, at 5 AM, some Louisiana alarm bird that sounded like a UPS outlet hub going bad, beeped me awake.

After I went back to bed, thunderstorms rolled by. Actually, the rain on the roof drowned out the local road noise so I did get a few hours of sleep during the storms.

I awoke again about 9 AM and decided to prepare for today's trek. Then, Tom comes in from outside and says, "There's another wrinkle in our plan. The RV has a flat tire." He went to the office and luckily someone was in the park who does onsite RV Repairs. Walter Hayes and his son from Walt's Mobile RV Service, LLC, in Ponchatoula, LA (985.386.5639) fixed the tire in no time flat.

While they were doing that, I took a walk to photograph some muscovy ducklings and flowers. Two momma ducks were herding 11 ducklings around the campground. The azaleas blooms looked shiny, wet from the morning thunderstorms.

Long stretches of I-10 West through the southern part of Louisiana need repair. As we bumpety-bumped along, we saw many wetlands. We drove by, near, or across many bayous or swamps. I saw many white egrets.

The billboards advertising Cajun Crawfish and Frog Legs caught Tom's attention, but not mine. We'll be in Texas tomorrow, so we won't get an opportunity to try out these local specialities this time. Ah, shucks!
