October 2005: Back "home" in Brookings, OR, VA, and MD

30 October 2005: Some autumn colors have finally arrived here in the Allegheny Mountains. I will be traveling some country roads to take some photographs of the season of fall here over the next few days. Visit my online gallery, Fall Colors, to view more photos of this beautiful season.

24 October 2005: After losing the key to the rental car in a Sheetz gas station and spending the night in Manassas, VA, waiting for the Chevy dealer to make a new key the next day, I finally arrived in MD where I visited a few relatives. My niece Leanne's kids are just adorable. TJ traveled with me to my sister's farm in Shenandoah, VA, where she watched my very creative sister make a scarecrow to keep the deer out of her orchard. She also fed the neighbor's horse carrots. She stared at the mountains and learned that the "smoke" was fog. As we walked around, she declared, "I want some peace and quiet." Space is good.

15 October 2005: My Mom has done very well with her first of 4-6 chemotherapy treatments. As I drove her over the Allegheny Mountains to and from Roanoke, VA, for her treatment yesterday, I was treated to an awesome sunrise and sunset. Alas, there was neither time nor opportunity for digital photos, but I did capture those beautiful colors in my mind, if just for a short time. The Allegheny Mountains are just west of the Blue Ridge Mountains, both part of the Appalachian Mountains here along the East Coast.

10 October 2005: Mom and I went to visit my sister on her farm-orchard in Shenandoah, VA. The weather was cool, misty and wet, and the trees' fall colors have not yet come alive. But, we enjoyed our visit with Candy, Phil, Bonnie, Bear, and their weekend dog, Blackie.

07 October 2005: Some cool, autumn rain has come to the valley here in the Blue Ridge Mountains in VA. The area has been dry and welcomes the moisture. I am caring for family, so I'm not doing much traveling these days, other than to doctors' offices. Bumps in the road ...

03 October 2005: Beautiful warm, sunny weather here in the Blue Ridge Mountains in VA! The leaves on the trees are just starting to turn their fall colors, a tad of yellow is visible. My "lost" luggage was left on the carport sometime in the wee hours of the morn'. Dad and I returned the rental car to Lexington as Mom is having a good day.

02 October 2005: I actually watched the sunrise this morning at Chicago Ohare Airport about 7 AM Central Time. A few thin clouds added some blue-gray-pink colors to the sky. It was quite AMAZING! Too bad that there was so much airport metal blocking my camera lens.

01 October 2005: The fog caused my flight from Crescent City, CA, to San Francisco to be delayed long enough that I missed my connection to the East Coast. So, I have a 9-hour layover in the airport waiting to catch a "red-eye" overnight flight to Chicago then a connecting flight to Roanoke, VA. It's going to be a long day's night! Tom, Harry, and Sadie are staying in Brookings while I tend to family affairs.
